Walker Street Children's Centre has officially opened its newly revamped waiting area, marking a significant improvement for young visitors and their families. The transformation was celebrated in October 2024 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony led by Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust's Chief Executive.
Previously described as "dark," "clinical," "intimidating," and "unwelcoming" by children, the waiting area has undergone a remarkable change. Thanks to funding from Health Stars, the space now features vibrant flooring, comfortable furniture, a climbing 'nest,' an interactive projector, and engaging activities designed to cater to children of all ages, including those who are neurodiverse.
A unique aspect of the project was its collaborative design process. The children and young people who use the centre played a key role in shaping the final look of the area, ensuring it truly meets their needs. The result is a bright, dynamic, and inclusive space that creates a sense of comfort and enjoyment for every visitor.
Michele Moran, Chief Executive said "The transformation of the waiting room is absolutely fabulous. We wanted to create a more colourful, vibrant and welcoming space for the children and young people who visit the Walker Street Children’s Centre, especially those with neurodiverse needs. A child who saw the new waiting room said it was a 160% better. We couldn’t have asked for better feedback! Thank you to everyone who made this possible."
This upgrade is more than just a physical improvement—it's a step towards making healthcare environments more accessible, engaging, and inclusive for children and their families.
