Patients and family members at a mental health inpatient unit in East Yorkshire fed back to staff during community meetings that the courtyard felt ‘oppressive and sterile’.
To help make the space feel more welcoming and relaxing, we provided funding for a mural to brighten the brick walls surrounding the outdoor area at Mill View Court. The idea for the mural came from the patients who use the outdoor space to support their recovery, and from family members visiting loved ones at the unit.
A spokesperson from the unit said: “We have recently carried out significant improvements to our outdoor space, including removing concrete slabs to create a grassed sensory area and adding plants and a putting green to encourage patients to spend time outdoors. We feel that a mural on the walls will further enhance the therapeutic environment, promote social interaction and support recovery.”
