The Hull NHS Choir and singer-songwriter Sam Scherdel have recorded a special choral version of his hit record 'Somewhere in Middle'.
The collaboration came about following Sam’s show in Hull during his tour 2025 tour. Hull NHS Choir leader, Lucy Vere, attended the show and loved Sam’s performance. She then shared the hit single with the group’s Musical Director, Mel, as part of a shortlist of potential choir songs for the New Year. “Somewhere in the Middle” was introduced to their weekly group in January.
The choir, who have previously performed for King Charles III, went on to create their own arrangement independently. When a clip of the performance began circulating on TikTok, Sam discovered it and immediately recognised its potential to grow into something bigger.
Lucy Vere said: “As a choir, we always tag the artists whose songs we sing on social media but Sam is the very first artist who ever replied. He told us how moved he was by our arrangement, and incredibly, within just six weeks of that original tagged video, we found ourselves in the studio with him recording our version together.
“Our choir exists to support NHS staff to relax, feel good, and reconnect, with music and with each other. To do that, people need to love what they’re singing and feel genuinely valued for what they do. The fact that Sam wanted to work with us has given the choir a huge boost and offered our members the experience of a lifetime.
Sam said: “I was just stunned seeing the song grow beyond anything I’ve ever released before. Honestly, it brought a tear to my eye hearing it performed like this. It’s something I never thought would be possible when I first put the song out.”
The track will be released exclusively on Bandcamp on Friday, 1 May 2026, with all proceeds going to Health Stars and Wishh - the charity of Hull Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.
A joint live performance of the track will form a thrilling part of Sam’s concert that will take place at The Social in Hull on 22 May 2026.
