Fiona has worked at Malton Community Hospital for 23 years and is the Ward Clerk for Fitzwilliam Ward. After 16 years in banking, she made the switch to healthcare in 2002 when a part-time admin job came up. Over time, she covered different roles throughout the hospital, but Fitzwilliam Ward stood out. When the ward clerk position became available, Fiona applied and has never looked back.
“I enjoy being part of a team and helping patients, visitors, and colleagues,” says Fiona. “I take pride in what I do and genuinely love coming to work.”
Fiona is now supporting the Better Days Appeal, a campaign from Health Stars to improve the hospital environment for patients. The team is raising funds to create a dementia-friendly day room, something Fiona believes will have real impact.
“This room will give patients a chance to move away from the bedside and take part in activities. It will help people feel more like themselves,” she explains. “My mum had Alzheimer’s and was once a patient on this ward. So this appeal means a lot to me personally.”
The Fitzwilliam Ward at Malton Community Hospital helps patients regain independence after being poorly or having treatment like an operation. The ward also provides compassionate palliative care, ensuring comfort and dignity for those in their final days.
Fiona and her team are proud of the work they do, and the new room will help them do even more.
