“I found the cards very beneficial from a personal point of view as they gave me inspiration and provided a connection to what was needed for the conversation of the group. I think the cards showed elements of people’s personality and encouraged conversation and connections between us.” Nurse
Nursing staff across Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust are using a set of resources funded by Health Stars to help facilitate reflection and powerful conversations around strengths.
The At My Best Strength Cards are used by the Trust’s Professional Nurse Advocate (PNA) Service during restorative clinical supervision: a structured space for staff to reflect on their experiences, manage stress, and develop resilience, ultimately helping to improve retention and the quality of patient care.
Donna Groke, Practice Education Facilitator and one of the Trust's Professional Nurse Advocates said:
“The Strength Cards have been a valuable tool for the Professional Nurse Advocates in supporting the health and wellbeing of our nursing colleagues.
“They've gently helped open meaningful conversations, particularly with teams experiencing change, such as during service re-structures, consultations, or when dynamics within a team are challenging.”
“We've also found them helpful on an individual level, offering a thoughtful starting point for those who may be feeling stuck in their role or navigating personal difficulties. While simple, the cards often prompt reflection and connection in ways that can really make a difference.”
PNAs also contribute to leadership by identifying service improvement opportunities and influencing positive changes within healthcare teams. Introduced as part of NHS England’s initiative to foster a more supportive and sustainable workforce, PNA’s bridge the gap between clinical practice and emotional support, promoting a culture of psychological safety and compassionate care.
