Aromatherapy gives young people a chance to slow down, relax, and process their emotions after a talking therapy session. It’s not just about smelling nice or feeling calm (though that helps!). It’s about creating a safe space where they can feel comfortable and supported.
We recently helped fund some materials for a new aromatherapy service made especially for young people going through tough times with their mental health. The sessions are run by Debra McAdam, a skilled clinical aromatherapist, who works with young people in CAMHS, Looked After Children, and those dealing with eating disorders across Hull and the East Riding of Yorkshire.
Debra says:
“I spend time getting to know each young person and make a special blend of essential oils just for them. Whether they’re struggling with anxiety, trauma, sleep problems, or sensory issues, I tailor the session to support whatever they need most.”
Many young people find the sessions so calming, they fall asleep: especially those who struggle with rest, anxiety, or feeling overwhelmed by the world around them.
Parents and carers are also welcome to get involved. Debra offers tips and ideas to help them continue using aromatherapy at home, so the young person can keep feeling the benefits between sessions.
The therapy space itself is designed to help the young people feel relaxed. It includes soft lighting, gentle music, and calming touch techniques that help young people feel at ease from the moment they walk in. It’s all about helping them feel safe, cared for, and ready to heal in a way that works for them.
